Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram is one of India’s most experienced interventional cardiologists, with a career spanning India and the United States and more than 2,500 CTO procedures performed. He specialises in Chronic Total Occlusion PCI, Complex High Risk Indicated Procedures (CHIP), and advanced structural and peripheral vascular interventions, bringing experience shaped by his training at the Cleveland Clinic and years of complex interventional practice in the United States and Asia.
He serves as the Asia Pacific CTO Club Director for India, contributing to physician training and standards for complex coronary intervention across the region. He routinely accepts complex CTO cases, including patients with failed prior PCI, and has trained and proctored physicians internationally in advanced CTO PCI techniques.
Dr. Kalyanasundaram is also one of the Founding Course Directors of CHIP CTO India, one of the region’s largest educational conferences dedicated to teaching Complex High Risk Indicated Procedures and Chronic Total Occlusion interventions. Through conferences, live cases, workshops, and physician training, the program advances education and expertise in complex coronary intervention.
He also leads the Asia Interventional Complications Course, an educational initiative focused on teaching interventional cardiologists how to prevent, recognise, and effectively manage complications during complex cardiovascular procedures.
Through these leadership and educational roles, Dr. Kalyanasundaram continues to contribute to the advancement of complex coronary intervention and physician training across India, Asia, and internationally.

Ranked the No. 1 hospital for heart care in the United States for 30 consecutive years (1995–2024) by U.S. News & World Report. He completed two consecutive fellowships: Interventional Cardiology Fellowship (2009–2010) followed by Peripheral & Structural Fellowship (2010–2011).
Founder, India’s First Dedicated CTO PCI Programme – Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi. Chief of Cardiology, Promed Hospital, Chennai. India Director, Asia-Pacific CTO Club. Founding Course Director, CHIP-CTO INDIA Conference. Inventor of the K14 Stingray CART technique, published 2023.
The K14 Stingray CART technique is a novel CTO PCI innovation developed and published by Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions in 2023 (PMID: 36617386). It is a modification of the standard antegrade dissection re-entry (ADR) approach that solves a previously unsolved failure mode in the Stingray re-entry step – when the wire does not adequately penetrate the Stingray port into the true lumen. Dr. Arun’s modification uses a CART manoeuvre to overcome this resistance, allowing successful re-entry in cases that would otherwise fail.
K14 stands for Kalyanasundaram – his nickname from fellowship days at the Cleveland Clinic. The technique has been adopted internationally. This is one of the clearest examples of a physician who does not merely perform complex interventions but advances the field itself.
